What is Cupping?

by Michelle Sauberzweig

Cupping therapy is a modality of Chinese Medicine that utilizes glass or plastic cups to create localized pressure, similar to a vacuum. It is indicated primarily for detoxification, musculoskeletal problems, common colds and other systemic issues. Used for 3,500 years, cupping therapy is growing in popularity, feels amazing and can drastically improve your health!

This therapy is very safe and has numerous benefits. The technique of cupping is done superficially, but it can affect tissues up to four inches deep! This causes tissues to release toxins, creating an effective detoxification for your body. Cupping also improves circulation, activates the lymphatic system, clears colon blockages, cleanses the skin, decreases stretch marks and improves varicose veins.

This method is generally performed on one’s back and usually leaves circular bruises that diminish in less than a week. Many celebrities have publically exposed their cupping marks over the past decade and are considered devotees to the therapy. The celebrities include Jennifer Aniston, Gwyneth Paltrow, Jessica Simpson and Victoria Beckham.
